Delays dog Delhi flyover opening

By A Business Correspondent

The commissioning of the Rs 60 crore flyover at the crossing of AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi has been postponed to March 2003 from the scheduled December 2002 deadline. This road section is being constructed by the UP State Bridge Corporation Ltd. Further, the Andrews Ganj and Mayapuri flyovers being executed Afcons will be ready only by the end of July and October, respectively. UPSBC and Afcons are constructing two flyovers each in the city.

The Delhi state government is, apparently, unhappy with the slow progress of the projects undertaken by Afcons and UPSBC.

Blame for the delay in the execution of projects rests with both-the local authorities and the contractors. Though, the state government is wont to hold the latter responsible. There was considerable delay in the relocation of services from the sites. The government's contention is that the contractors lack funds to go ahead with the projects. In addition, the Supreme Court's order halting quarrying within 5 km of the Delhi border has resulted in shortage of raw material.
