Work on Rani Avantibai Sagar Project begins

Work on the execution of the Right Bank Canal Project of the Rani Avantibai Sagar Project near Jabalpur on the Narmada river (Bargi Diversion Project) has been initiated by the Madhya Pradesh government. Initially, the work in this approved project has been taken up from headworks to 16 km with funds from Nabard.
The Union government had provided Rs 98.03 crore during 2001-2002 under the Fast Track Programme of the Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme for construction of canal system, including distributaries from 16 km to 63 km.
As per the MoU signed between the Union and state governments, the component under Fast Track Programme is to be completed in one year (two working seasons). This information was provided by Union Minister of State for Water Resources Bijoya Chakravarty.
The total cost of Rani Avanti Bai Sagar Irrigation Project is placed at Rs 750 crore. On completion nearly 157,000 hectares would benefit.
