In Brief
UP to have some more STPs
Undeterred by the lukewarm response from IT firms, Uttar Pradesh is going ahead with development of more software technology parks at Allahabad, Varanasi, Agra and Meerut. UP has three STPs at Noida, Lucknow and Kanpur, with Noida being the only one to have met with some degree of success. At Lucknow STP, only one software company has set up its unit while at Kanpur, which has 25 incubation centres, none have turned up as yet. About 60 workstations, equipped with IBM computers and sophisticated IT facilities, are lying unutilised. More than Rs 10 crore has been invested.
Apparel zone in West Bengal
The West Bengal government is planning to set up an apparel zone on the lines of the one in Bangladesh. The zone would be spread over an area of 70 acres. The government is looking for a suitable plot near Dankuni for the project. A 23-acre hosiery estate along Kona Expressway is also mooted in a bid to revive West Bengal's prime position in the hosiery industry. Units which had left the state due to industrial unrest are now being wooed back. More computer-aided design centres will be created with the help of fashion experts.
