Tata Group in expansion mode

Tata group companies have been aggressively marching ahead. After taking over CMC and VSNL it has now bought over 51 per cent equity in Hughes Telecom. Besides expanding in new fields it is also moving ahead in its key sectors. Some group companies, namely TCS, CMC. Tata Power, Tata Steel and Tata Infotech, have recently bagged prestigious projects.
Tata Consultancy Services
Tata Consultancy Services and CMC, India's premier IT company (now in the Tatas fold), have jointly bagged the project for an "integrated port management system" from Adani Ports Ltd involving the computerisation of bulk cargo needs for its Mundra Port in Kachchh district of Gujarat.
Mundra, one of the first private ports to be set up in India, has bulk and container-handling facilities, with drafts deep enough to accommodate large vessels. CMC, with its proven competencies in the ports and cargo area for the last decade, will update its cargo logistics management product to meet the requirements of ports in India and abroad.
Tata Power Company
Effective July 1, Tata Power Company Ltd will distribute power in the north and north-west regions of Delhi. The company has bought 51 per cent stake in one of the three power distribution companies in the state, namely North and North-West Delhi Distribution Company. TPL will be responsible for supplying power to an estimated 7.5 lakh consumers, predominantly industrial, in the region, besides metering, billing, containing power thefts and transmission losses. A shareholding agreement was recently signed with the Delhi government.
The state government aims to curb power thefts with the privatisation of the Delhi Vidyut Board. SBI Caps served as lead managers to the privatisation process.
TISCO
Tata Steel is carrying out a techno-economic feasibility study for the setting up of a titanium dioxide project in Tamil Nadu. Four international consultants have been shortlisted for undertaking the job valued at Rs 16 crore.
