With an installed capacity of 1,507 mw, India is the 5th largest producer of wind power after Germany, the US, Spain and Denmark. Much of this installed capacity has come through commercial projects. About 8.8 billion units of electricity have been fed to various state grids from wind power projects. The gross wind power potential in the country, which was initially estimated at 20,000 mw, has been re-assessed at 45,000 mw, assuming 1 per cent of land availability for wind power generation in potential areas. The technical potential is estimated at 13,000 mw.
    Commercial projects with an aggregate capacity of 1,444 mw have been established mainly in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The largest installation of wind turbines (425 mw) in the country so far has been in the Muppandal-Perungudi area near Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu.
    Some of the states with high wind power potential are Andhra Pradesh (8,275 mw), Gujarat (9,675 mw), Karnataka (6,620 mw), Madhya Pradesh (5,500 mw), Rajasthan (5,400 mw), Maharashtra (3,650 mw), Tamil Nadu (3,050 mw) and Orissa (1,700 mw). The Centre for Wind Energy Technology (C-WET) of the Government of India, in coordination with state nodal agencies, is implementing the Wind Resources Assessment Programme covering 25 states and Union Territories.
