Koparkhairane Railway Station in Navi Mumbai
will soon have a face uplift. The railway will have a roofing of
stainless steel sheets with polyster Koreanblue resin coating. The 10,000 sq m curved
roofing of Railway Station developed by the City and Industrial Development
Corporation (CIDCO) of Maharashtra has opted to use 70 tonnes of steel supplied
by Salem Steel Plant (SSP) of the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) for its
roof. Earlier Airoli Railway Station has taken 50 tonnes of Stainless steel
coils for its roofing.
Stainless steel is preferred as it is cheaper (
if one considers the life cycle cost) than conventional pre-painted mild steel
sheet. The resin coating adds to the aesthetics.
The usage of stainless steel for roofing
has been approved by The Railways. Turbhe Railway Station is the next in line.
The panelling for the Metro Railway Station in Kolkata was done with Salem
stainless steel. Railways have also
undertaken stainless steel fabrication of modular rail marts and sub pantries
for the coaches of Jan Shatabdi Express. (pm-08092002)
