Gujarat: Coping with Dsasters
By A Staff Reporter
Gujarat, which has had to cope with more than its fair share of disasters in the last five years, has decided to create infrastructure on permanent basis for disaster management. The Gujarat State Disaster Management Institute is being constituted to impact training to officers and NGOs. Three Regional Emergency Response Centres would be set up in Ahmedabad, Surat and Rajkot to meet with any emergency situation.
The state, where a large number of chemical units are in operation, is also setting up a Chemical Disaster Response Centre at Vadodara. A Disaster Management Bill has been enacted to meet the challenges posed by natural disasters.
A seismology institute is also being set up in the state and a subject on disaster management would feature in schools and technical institutes. Other steps mooted include initiatives for implementing building code, study of hazardous and disaster prone areas, and setting up emergency communication and early warning systems.
