. Project implementation in India is often misunderstood to connote civil construction works. While construction is, undoubtedly, an important aspect and cannot be derided there are a lot of activities preceding it. These include conceptualisation, planning, estimating, bidding, designing and project management.
The Engineering and Construction Division (ECD) of Larsen & Toubro Ltd offers integrated solutions for project owners. It provides services in the areas of process technology, basic and detailed engineering, skid mounted modular fabrication, procurement, logistics, fabrication, construction, erection, commissioning and project management. It executes projects on turnkey basis. The E&C division is increasingly expanding its footprints in the global market and has bagged quite a few prestigious projects. “Our ambition is to be a prime contractor in the global market and deliver projects valued up to $200-250 million,” says K.V. Venkatraman, President of E&C division and Director of the company. Over the last one year the division has been focusing on three main growth areas: hydro projects, power and oil and gas sectors. “Indian project management capabilities are being recognised and we are making full use of our multi-tasking skills,” he says. Amongst the new markets Venkatraman feels that the CIS countries offer good opportunities. Past record in executing similar jobs help. “So do recommendations of clients for whom we have undertaken jobs in the past,” Venkatraman explains. This definitely helps clients in taking a decision on awarding large contracts. The recommendations given by L&T’s clients directly to Kuwait National Petroleum Company was one of the crucial features contributing to L&T getting pre-qualified for the two Sulfur Recovery projects of KNPC. “The award of these contracts serve as important milestones as it helps in establishing our own brand value in international markets and also in giving comfort to new clients,” Venkatraman says.
