Suzlon setting up small wind energy turbines in Tirupati
Suzlon, the Pune-based renewable energy company, is setting up a string of small wind energy turbines atop the holy Tirumala Hills in Tirupati. Civil works for the 6 x 1-mw units of the wind power project have already begun. The objective is to supply power to the central grid that is currently meeting the needs of the increasing number of pilgrims who visit the temple town.
While the Pune company will fund the entire project and run it, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam will be the owner and pay a nominal rate per unit towards the cost of the energy produced. The investment for setting up a 1-mw wind turbine power generator is around Rs 3.5 crore.
The entire site selection to put up the wind turbines on Tirumala had been done by the Centre for Energy Technology, a renewable energy focused group under the Osmania University Engineering College.
