Two units of Indira Sagar to be ready by December
Two 125-mw units each of the Indira Sagar Project are expected to start generating power by December 2003. Recently, the mechanical spinning trial for the first rotor was successfully carried out and officials are confident of generating power from both the units by the last week of November or first week of December 2003. By then the two units would be able to generate only 164 mw of power, as the maximum water level the dam will attain by that time will be only 138 ft. For these two units to operate at optimum generation capacity the water level in the dam should reach 245 ft. The current water level is nearly 129 ft, which is sufficient to spin the turbine with nearly 360 tonnes of rotor.
Further, the third unit of the project is expected to be commissioned by March 2004. By December 2004, all the eight units of the power station are likely to become operational. It may be noted that as per the earlier schedule the power projects were to become fully operational by the year 2006. The news of early completion of the projects may be godsend for Madhya Pradesh, which is reeling under acute power shortage.
The 1,000-mw (125x8) power project is being implemented by the Narmada Hydroelectric Development Corporation Ltd, a joint venture between National Hydro Electric Power Corporation and Narmada Valley Development Authority. The original cost of the project was Rs 2,326 crore which was later revised upwards to Rs 3,528 crore. The project was funded through equity by NHPC and the MP government and through loans from external agencies.
