Tuticorin Port handles 13 lakh tonnes of cargo in August
The cargo handled by Tuti-corin Port Trust was up 18 per cent to 13.01 lakh tonnes in August 2003, from 11.06 lakh tonnes a year ago. The performance also exceeded the 12.15 lakh tonnes target fixed for the month.
Out of the traffic, imports accounted for 9.95 lakh tonnes and exports 3.06 lakh tonnes. Container traffic was 23,099 TEUs compared to 19,601 TEUs handled for the corresponding period of last year.
POL traffic increased by 39.44 per cent, thermal coal by 48.48 per cent, industrial coal by 59.62 per cent, petroleum coke by 76.92 per cent, timber logs by 61.75 per cent and granite stone by 15.46 per cent, when compared to August 2002. There was reduced arrival of wheat vessels due to shortage of rakes for transportation of wheat to Tuticorin port for export.
