Chemithon pioneers flue gas conditioning system

PM News Bureau

Chemithon Engineers Pvt. Ltd, an ISO certified company, is engaged in manufacturing sulfonation plants and flue gas conditioning systems for the last 12 years. Chemithon pioneered the first SO3 flue gas conditioning systems in 1970. In 2000, the company tied up with Heavy Water Board, under the Department of Atomic Energy, for NH3 flue gas conditioning for the domestic thermal power sector using coal.
The company has so far installed flue gas conditioning systems in four thermal power stations: Ukai TPS of Gujarat Electricity Board, Gurunanakdev TPS of Punjab State Electricity Board, Kolaghat TPS in West Bengal and Durgapur Projects Ltd. While the 1st three FGC systems have been installed, the one at Durgapur is under implementation. The company is also in advanced stage of negotiations for installing the system for Kolaghat TPS 1&3 and Bandel TPS, unit 6, in West Bengal. The company has bid for Rihand phase-II of NTPC for installing FGC system.
Says Dr Ravindra C. Phadke, General Manager-Marketing, Chemithon Engineers Pvt. Ltd, "Most of the thermal power stations (including that of NTPC) were set up long ago keeping in mind the environment standards prevailing then. But, over the years these environment standards have become more stringent. For example, earlier emission norms were fixed at 350 MG/NN3. Now the same has been brought down to less than 50 MG/NN3 for plants located within city limits and 150 MG/NN3 for plants located outside city limits." Most of the old plants have to change their Electro Static Precipitator to meet the latest environment standards. But changing ESP involves huge costs and production loss of four-six months. "Our system is such that its installation does not involve production stoppage," Dr Phadke states. "At the same time we can increase the efficiency of ESP through FGC system at 1/4th the normal cost. Besides, our system is flexible and any change in emissions due to change in use of raw materials can be controlled by varying the dosing."
On the acceptance of the product, Dr Phadke says, "There is a lack of awareness about our product and it will take time before people come to know more about it. Further, there is apprehension about the viability of this product. With our units already in use at four places this problem can be overcome soon. Another issue is the procedure involved in various government agencies. Since ours is a new concept, introduced for the first time in the country, these formalities are more rigorous and time consuming."
Chemithon is currently concentrating on coal-based thermal power plants. But plans are on the anvil to apply the technology with modification to the cement industry, coal-based sponge iron plants, lignite-based thermal pants and steel pants. The company is doing research at its R&D centre for this purpose.
