Master Plan for 'holy city' of Amarkantak

The Madhya Pradesh government has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the development of Amarkantak, the source of river Narmada. Announcing the scheme at Amarkantak recently, Babulal Gaur, state Minister for Urban Administration and Development announced the immediate sanction of Rs 10 lakh for drainage system and other construction works at Amarkantak. The government will constitute a high-level committee to formulate and implement the action plan for Amarkantak.
The state Cabinet has declared Amarkantak, Maheshwar and certain parts of Ujjain as holy cities.
The minister said that a 20-bed hospital and a gas agency would be established as part of the project to develop Amarkantak. An Ayurvedic herbs production-cum-research centre has been planned for the city. Amarkantak would also be developed as a tourist centre.
