By Harish Rao
Sri Shankaranarayana Construction Company, a Bangalore-based construction company, is planning to go in for ISO-9001 certification. This will help the 44-year old construction company to compete with other leading construction firms while bidding for new projects. Says Bhaskar, CFO, SNC, "It will also help us to take up projects abroad," SNC has already done some projects abroad, notably the Rs 7 crore railway tunnel project in Malaysia.
SNC was recently in the news for completing unit-I of the 290-mw Almatti Power Project four months ahead of schedule. The entire project is expected to be completed in the next four-five months. About 85 per cent of the work of the Rs 114-crore project has been completed. The company has used steel structural columns in place of concrete RCC columns. Similarly, in many areas RCC has been replaced by steel to give more strength and longevity to the structure.
SNC is also executing Rs 227 crore worth of civil works for the 500-mw Bellary Thermal Power Project. The company is doing the work for BHEL, which has been awarded the Rs 2,100 crore contract by the Karnataka Power Corporation. The company has already started working on the project and is expected to complete it in 33 months.
In the coming days, the company will concentrate on roads, bridges, power projects, irrigation projects and rail systems. The company is currently undertaking the Rs 195 crore National Highway project in Orissa and as also the Rs 419 crore Parbati Hydro tunnel project. Says Bhaskar, "The company is readying itself to take full advantage of the opportunities arising out of the increased thrust given by the government to infrastructure development."
