By Prashant C. Trikannad
Construction major Gammon India Ltd has a current order order of Rs 3,070 crore that includes several projects in the roads and bridges sector.
The Mumbai-based company is among the seven construction firms most likely to be awarded, for the first time, road projects under the Rs 40,000-crore Pradhan Mantri Bharat Jodo Pariyojana (PMBJP). Gammon is likely to win the Rs 570-crore contract for the 100-km Vadape-Gonde road section in Maharashtra. The LoI for the project is expected to be issued shortly.
The company had bid for three of the seven sections under this programme, the other two projects being in Rajasthan. The bids for the seven NHAI sections were opened quite recently (see box).
Gammon India is currently executing road projects in various states including Maharashtra, Orissa, Punjab, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. "We are working with Kerala PWD presently for a small bridge project on a tolling module. Apart from that we are in the process of shortlisting some projects for Punjab," Girish Kamath, Manager, Gammon Infrastructure Projects Ltd, says.
Early this year, the company was awarded a Rs 80 crore project to construct railway overbridges linking Santacruz and Chembur, under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project. The project also envisages the construction of a two-storeyed viaduct near Kurla, which will reduce travel time to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.
The company is also constructing a road overbridge at Damoria Pull, Jalandar, for the Municipal Corporation of Jalandar. This contract is valued at Rs 20 crore.
Meanwhile, the work on the 53-km long Dharmavaram-Rajamundry and 47-km long Tuni-Dharmavaram road stretches on NH-5 in Andhra Pradesh is progressing smoothly. The projects, under NHDP, are expected to be completed before November 2004, the stipulated time of completion. Gammon India is executing the projects through two special purpose vehicles, Rajamundry Expressway Ltd and Andhra Expressway Ltd, respectively, in a joint venture with Punj Lloyd Ltd.
Says Girish Kamath, "These road projects have been most successful under the Annuity funding model."
