MGL to expand beyond Mumbai

Mahanagar Gas Ltd will expand its operations to areas beyond Mumbai to the neighbouring areas of Thane, Navi Mumbai and even Pune. In the current year, MGL plans to extend the pipeline to bring numbers up to 2,50,000 domestic, 1,040 commercial and 99 industrial customers by laying a further 40-km steel pipeline and 115-km polyethylene pipe. Currently, it has 1,87,000 domestic, 540 commercial and 40 industrial customers. Further, MGL built a CNG infrastructure consisting of 282 dispensing points at 60 outlets by the end of 2003. MGL has a network of 1,650 km of steel and polyethylene pipeline through which it delivers more than 10-million standard cubic metres per day (mmscmd) to customers.
MGL's total deliveries in 2003 amounted to 300 mmscmd, which is an increase of 46 per cent over the previous year.
Both British Gas India and GAIL (India) Ltd hold 49.75 per cent each equity stake in MGL. The Government of Maharashtra holds the balance half per cent stake.
