GAIL plans coal gasification project in Rajasthan
GAIL (India) Ltd is planning to use lignite, which cannot be mined
commercially, to produce synthetic gas by employing underground coal gasification technology. The company has reportedly identified two locations in Rajasthan for the purpose and will shortly approach the state government. GAIL plans to use the gas so produced to generate 70-80 mw of power. A detailed feasibility study of the project is due this month. The company hopes to start project work in early 2005. It may tie up with Ergo Exergy Technologies Inc., Canada, for sourcing "in-situ lignite gasification" technology for its proposed project.
