Gujarat signs 212 MoUs

The Gujarat government signed 212 MoUs worth Rs 1,06,161 crore during the just-concluded Global Investors' Summit - Vibrant Gujarat 2005. Most of the proposals were in energy and petrochemicals sector. The energy sector alone accounted for Rs 58,087 crore. Besides this four industrial houses, Torrent, Essar, Welspun and Adani, have pledged investments of Rs 12,000 crore in either gas-based or lignite-based power projects. However, they could not sign MoUs with the state government as these projects involve Central clearance. 
The ports sector accounted for 35 MoUs worth Rs 15,587 crore. The Adani group has expressed its intention to develop Umbergaon port at a cost of Rs 6,000 crore. In the engineering sector, 33 MoUs worth Rs 16,601 crore were signed; in agro-industries and marine sectors, 34 MoUs worth Rs 1,045 crore; in emerging technologies, 17 MoUs worth Rs 393 crore; in chemicals and pharmaceutical sectors, 42 MoUs worth Rs 3,645 crore; in urban development, 13 MoUs worth Rs 9,100 crore; and, in the gems and jewellery sector, MoUs worth Rs 297 crore were signed. Tourism and coastal development accounted for Rs 7,254 crore worth of MoUs.
