By Madhu Chittora
Advances in welding technology such as the availability of superior welding machines and cheaper and better welding filler metal are some of the latest innovations in fabrication industry. Another development is the use of high precision computerised numerically controlled (CNC) machines.
"For the next four to five years, our industry will make much progress," says S.R. Gandhi, CEO and Director, Oriental Manufacturers Pvt. Ltd. Diversification is the key in today's world. The Gujarat-based company is contemplating developing woodwork in machinery like making wooden sheets. The company is into fabrication of process equipments for chemical fertiliser and pharmaceutical companies. The company's main product is centrifuge which is used for solid separation from liquids in process equipments. For this, the company has a technological collaboration with Krauss Maffei Process Technology, Germany.
The demand for the centrifuge industry in India is huge, currently at around Rs 100 crore. The latest technology in this field is complete automation due to the availability of electronic components. The company has orders to supply centrifuges to Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd, Chandigarh, Matrix Laboratory Ltd, Hyderabad, Lupin Ltd, Ankleshwar and Cadilla, Ahmedabad. The cost of a centrifuge ranges from Rs 5-30 lakh. Some of the company's models are Pushers Centrifuges and Vertical-Bottom Discharge Centrifuges.
About his company's services, Gandhi states, "We observed that the other players are good at normal fabrication work but not the kind of fabrication work that requires fine machining, precision machine equipments and critical assemblages." Oriental offers all kinds of services - drawing and design of the instruments, manufacturing and commissioning. The company is largely into execution of turnkey projects.
Oriental Manufacturers is exploring markets in the Gulf and in Sri Lanka. It exports to Bangladesh, which is a deemed export. "In India, the fabrication market is marked by the presence of subsidiaries of multinational companies," says Gandhi. "We compete with them in price and quality as their overheads are high."
