Zero-accident zone on Ring Road

PM News Bureau

The Institute for Road Traffic Education plans to develop the 10-km Ring Road stretch between Shanti Van and Burari Chowk as an accident-free zone. The project is funded by the Ford Foundation, Indian Merchant's Chamber, Mumbai, and Delhi Traffic Police.
The stretch, which covers Vijay Ghat, Burari intersection, Gopalpur, ISBT out gate, Majnu-ka-Tila, Shanti Van, Nigambod Ghat and Buddhist Monastery, was surveyed by the IRTE in the first public-private venture in the city. The IRTE's road safety audit projected that maximum number of accidents occur at ISBT out gate, with Majnu-ka-Tila and Burari intersections coming a close second. IRTE is planning to remodel the traffic engineering patterns on the stretch and upgrade street furniture, including signage and markings. They are also planning to invite private partnership for post-accident management, including blood donation, insurance, ambulance support and trauma care centres.
