Dinesh Mehta, Professor Emeritus at CEPT University, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, has a Ph.D. from University of Pennsylvania and a Master’s in City and Regional Planning from Harvard University, USA, and a Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering, IIT-Madras.

Mehta, who had 57 years of professional experience, has established Dinesh Mehta Associates Pvt. Ltd, a consulting organisation in architectural, engineering and consultancy services in Delhi. The company executes diversified projects in various disciplines of architecture and engineering.

He has taught urban management, housing and development planning at CEPT University and has also published extensively on poverty and equity issues, including, among other themes, water and sanitation. He has been associated with CEPT since 1977, when he joined as Assistant Professor. He was also Director of School of Planning at CEPT from 1985-92. Besides, he was Director of National Institute of Urban Affairs, New Delhi, during 1992-97. He has worked with the United Nations, at UN-HABITAT, Nairobi, Kenya, as head of the Urban Management Programme.

More recently, Mehta attended a high-level conference organised by the Global Water Programme at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Centre on accelerating sustainable, people-centered integrated water services for the poor, from August 29-September 2, 2011.

Dinesh Mehta has been adjudged the 2013 IWA Development Solutions Award winner for research. The award was presented in October 2013 in Nairobi. The following citation was provided by the IWA Honours and Awards committee: “Over a number of years, Dinesh Mehta has and continues to be highly respected and influential water professional, both in his native India and other low and middle income countries. Providing leadership and guidance to governments and municipalities on issues related to urban planning and service provision, Dinesh has worked across the spectrum of research, practice and policy, with a particular emphasis on pro-poor services; contributing to a range of high-profile publications.”
