Dr. Deepankar Choudhury, a Fellow of Humboldt State University, California, USA; Japan Society for the Promotion of Science; and BOYSCAST, is currently working as Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay. Deepankar, a B.E. gold medalist from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, received his Ph.D. from IISc Bengaluru. He worked as a graduate design engineer at Development Consultants Ltd, Kolkata, for one year, lecturer at IIT Kanpur for eight months after his PhD, joined IIT Bombay in 2003 as Assistant Professor, mentored new IIT Gandhinagar in 2009, and was promoted to the position of Professor in 2012. He is also currently holding the position of ‘Adjunct Faculty’ of Academic Scientific and Innovative Research, is connected to Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee, serving as Secretary of ISSMGE Technical Committee TC 212 on Deep Foundations, and is Member of TC 203 on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering.
Besides, Dr. Choudhury has visited University of California, Berkeley, USA; National University of Singapore; University of Wollongong, Australia; Kagoshima University, Japan; and Technical University Darmstadt, Germany. His major research areas include geotechnical earthquake engineering, foundation engineering, computational geomechanics, earthquake resistant design of retaining walls, pile foundations, shallow foundations, reinforced soil walls, earth dams, landfills, dynamic responses of railway, runways and pavement subgrades among others.
Dr. Choudhury’s fundamental basic researches are applied for various practical problems such as adopting new earthquake resistant design methodologies for geotechnical structures. He also pioneered the development of new ‘pseudo-dynamic method’ for seismic design and analysis of seismically loaded geotechnical structures, which was accepted and used worldwide. He has received several young scientist/engineer awards from national academies like Indian National Academy of Engineering, Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences India as well as from various professional bodies like Institution of Engineers India and Department of Science and Technology. He has also been honoured with various international awards and recognitions.
Dr. Choudhury is currently Editorial Board Member for International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Bulletin, Indian Geotechnical Journal and other international journals.
