Samir Surlaker_ProjectsMonitorSamir Surlaker is a civil and structural engineer from VJTI having over 35 years of national and international experience and exposure in construction chemicals, rehabilitation strategies, and injection systems etc. in Germany, Europe, Middle East, Asia-Pacific countries and India. He is currently Managing Director of MC-Bauchemie (India) Pvt. Ltd, a joint venture with MC-Bauchemie, Germany, manufacturing over 200 construction chemicals.

Surlaker studied and compared ASTM, BS and DIN Standard for concrete testing procedures in 1978-79 to establish equivalence. He was actively involved in advanced research in R&D lab for testing compatibility of admixtures with various cements and inter admixture compatibility testing for other cementitious materials like fly ash, GGBSF, micro silica etc.

Speaking to Projectmonitor on the opportunities for young engineers in the construction chemicals sector, Surlaker said, “The fields young engineers would cover in this field would include but not be limited to concrete technology, QA/QC, concrete finishing, repairs and protection and so on. With so many fields to choose from, the opportunities for young engineers are very bright, provided they have the interest and passion for it.”

He is Fellow of The Concrete Society (UK), Institution of Engineers, Indian Institute of Valuers, Indian Concrete Institute, Indian Association of Structural Engineers, Indian Association of Technical Arbitrators, Indian Institute of Bridge Engineers, Indian Water Works Association, and Indian Geotechnical Society etc. He is associated with several professional bodies and is a member of American Concrete Institute and American Society of Civil Engineering, Indian Road Congress, Indian Construction Association, Architectural Engineering Institute, International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, Deep Foundation Institute (USA), and The Society for Protective Coatings (USA) etc.

He has delivered over 600 lectures in building chemicals, repair and rehabilitation, concrete admixtures, industrial floorings at seminars held by Institute of Engineers, American Concrete Institute, and Indian Concrete Institute etc., and training programmes arranged by ACC, Gujarat Ambuja, several engineering and architectural colleges, CEPT Ahmedabad, MES, ISRO Kerala, and IRICEN etc. His over 100 technical papers and articles are published in several national and international engineering journals in the field of construction chemicals, rehabilitations, protection and high performance and self-compacting concretes etc. He is co-author of Handbook of Advanced Concrete Technology.

Surlaker is a member of the Bureau of Indian Standards in CED 2, CED 5 & CED 41 committee for waterproofing and heads a few sub-committees for formulations of IS Codes for advanced techniques and materials in waterproofing and concrete protection. He is also member of state of art committee of ICI for admixtures.

He is a recipient of several national and international awards like Udyog Ratan Award by IES, Young Indian Award of Jaycees and International Man of the Year for waterproofing and protection by Cambridge, UK.
