During January 2015, a total of 125 contracts with a total order value of Rs.17,973.16 crore were awarded in India, as per data compiled by ProjectsToday. These orders, including domestic and overseas, were won by 95 companies across various sectors. Further, of the 125 finalised contracts, 11 were bagged by Indian companies for projects overseas.
The Telangana government selected Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd for setting up the newly-formed state’s first supercritical thermal power plant. Valued at Rs.3,810 crore, the order for setting up a 1×800 MW supercritical thermal power plant on EPC basis, at Kothagudem, in Khammam district of Telangana, has been placed by Telangana State Power Generation Corporation.
The project is scheduled to be commissioned in 36 months on a fast-track basis with both, BHEL and TSGENCO setting up teams to expedite clearances and execution of the project. The key equipment for the contract will be manufactured at BHEL’s Trichy, Hyderabad, Haridwar, Bhopal, Ranipet, Bengaluru and Jhansi plants, with the company’s Power Sector – Southern Region responsible for civil works and erection and commissioning of the equipment.
Indosolar, a manufacturer of solar photovoltaic cells, entered into a wafer purchase agreement with Korea’s Osung LST Company for Rs.1,250 crore, till 2018. The wafer supply contract, signed on January 28, 2015, as part of the $200-million agreement, covers a significant portion of Indosolar’s solar photovoltaic cell demand for FY2015-16 of 48 million wafers, at approximately $45 million (Rs.260 crore).
Nokia Networks secured the third largest contract of the month worth Rs.1,240 crore, from Bharti Airtel, to build the country’s first 4G network in the 1,800 MHz band in six telecom circles (Mumbai, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Punjab and Kerala). The deal marks India’s first FDD-LTE deployment on 1,800 MHz that will witness the launch of superfast mobile broadband in six circles.
The fourth largest contract, valued at Rs.1,202 crore, was awarded by Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd to BHEL for setting up a 370-MW gas turbine-based combined cycle power plant to be installed at Yelahanka, near Bengaluru, on EPC basis. The scope of work involves design, engineering, manufacture, supply, construction, erection, testing and commissioning of the EPC package, comprising an advanced-class gas turbine-based combined cycle power plant. Work is likely to be completed in nine months from the date of commencement.
Fresh contracts
In January 2015, 42 fresh contracts worth Rs.2,598 crore were awarded in the roadways sector. National Buildings Construction Corporation bagged the largest domestic contract worth Rs.1,237 crore, awarded by Odisha PWD under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in certain IAP (Integrated Action Plan) districts of the state.
Nineteen contracts worth Rs.1,755 crore were awarded in the power distribution sector last month. Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd owned 14 of the 19 contracts.
The largest contract in this sector, worth Rs.256 crore, was awarded by Ceylon Electricity Board to ABB India for supply of two new 220kV substations and upgradation of an existing substation in Sri Lanka, on turnkey basis. The scope involves design, engineering, supplying and commissioning the substations and providing the following equipment: high-voltage air-insulated switchgear, medium-voltage indoor gas-insulated switchgear, power transformers, IEC 61850-compliant protection and substation automation, and fibre optic communications systems.
Railways saw the finalisation of 11 new contracts worth Rs.2,858.94 crore. The largest contract in this sector was finalised by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, for a Rs.465-crore job to Alstom Transport India for supplying signalling, telecom and electrification solutions for the new Kochi Metro line. It will provide integrated telecom solutions, including radio, CCTV, passenger information display system etc., to guarantee comfort and security of passengers, and will manufacture, supply, install, test and commission rail traction electrification and auxiliary substations and associated SCADA systems.
Overseas contracts
In January 2015, Indian companies bagged 11 overseas contracts worth Rs.1,246.6 crore in power distribution, railways, community services, iron ore, computer software, alcohols and derivatives, and water supply sectors from countries like Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Singapore, Ireland, UK, Uganda and Oman.
