Greenbuild India event

BENGALURU – (Feb. 06, 2020) – Today, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) reiterated its commitment to enabling sustainable and green building development in India by hosting its flagship event on sustainability – Greenbuild India, in Bangalore. Currently in its 3rd edition, the event is India’s premier platform that brings together industry leaders, experts and frontline professionals dedicated to sustainable building in their everyday work to share their vision about the future of green construction and infrastructure development in India. Recognized as the world’s largest green building conference experience with events in key regions across the world including the U.S., China, Mexico, and Europe; this was Bangalore’s first tryst at hosting this prestigious event.

With India and the world at large continuing to grapple with problems such as climate change and sustainable development, this year’s edition of Greenbuild India focused on the future of LEED and green buildings, and its role in addressing pressing issues impacting human health and the environment, such as air quality, energy use, waste reduction and global climate change. The Garden City of India, Bangalore, has experienced the adverse effects of climate change and unplanned development first-hand where its weather patterns have become more erratic and temperatures tend to gravitate towards extremes. However, the City is working towards mitigating these issues by adopting LEED certification. Bangalore has more than 480 projects engaged with LEED, of which nearly 290 are certified with over 99 million square feet. The city also has more than 123 LEED credentialed professionals with the skills and knowledge to take projects through the certification process.

“India continues to be a global leader in green building. By pursing LEED certification for buildings and spaces, India is not only contributing to economic growth and development, but actively raising the living standard for its residents by providing more resilient, healthier and efficient buildings and communities,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO of U.S. Green Building Council and GBCI. “At Greenbuild India we’re convening green building experts from all over the country as we work to build a more sustainable future for all people.”

Bangalore’s contribution to Karnataka’s sustainability ranking is reflected by the state’s placement in Top 10 States for LEED in India, where it placed 2nd with over 104 million certified gross square feet and 303 LEED-certified projects. Some of the LEED projects in Bangalore include, Infosys, RMZ, Armstrong Design, LinkedIn, ITC Gardenia, Flipkart and more.

India is consistently one of the most rapidly expanding markets for LEED in the world. The country is home to more than 3,200 LEED projects, representing more than 1.6 billion gross square feet of space. The ideas and passions of the green building community come alive each year at Greenbuild India. It is where inspiration happens, business relationships are cultivated, innovation is recognized and celebrated and where people from around the globe come to reconnect and remind each other why they do what they do – and why they work hard every day to create better buildings, cities and communities.
