The second phase of the Koyilandy fishing harbour development is entering its final stages, with officials confirming that the majority of infrastructure upgrades are now complete. The project, which represents a significant investment in the region’s maritime infrastructure, aims to alleviate congestion and improve working conditions for the local fishing community.
Funded under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the initiative is supported by a combined investment of Rs 26.78 crore, with costs shared between the Union and State governments in a 60:40 ratio. The construction work is largely finished, with only the installation of CCTV security systems remaining. An official date for the inauguration of the upgraded facility is expected to be announced shortly.
The expansion project was designed to address the growing demand at the harbour, where an increasing number of vessels have frequently faced delays in landing their catches. Central to the improvements is a new 100-metre-long and 7.5-metre-wide finger jetty, which allows for simultaneous berthing on both sides to streamline operations. This is complemented by a newly constructed road leading to the jetty and an expanded parking area located near the southern breakwater.
Beyond berthing capacity, the development includes a comprehensive suite of amenities aimed at modernising the site. These upgrades feature a renovated auction hall, a modernised fish landing centre, and a dedicated net-mending shed. To support the preservation of high-value stock during peak landing periods, a new cold storage unit with a 10-tonne capacity has been installed. Officials have indicated that plans are currently in place to hand over the daily management of this cold storage facility to Matsyafed.
