Bridge linking India-Sri Lanka proposed
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has proposed the building of a land bridge between Sri Lanka and India. According to Arjunna Mahendran, the Chairman and Director General of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, the Board has been asked to draw plans for this project.
BoI has already completed a preliminary pre-feasibility conceptual study for the project, which envisages a bridge between Thalaimannar and Dhanushkodi in Sri Lanka and then on to Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu. The study entails a 22-km long link over shallow sea at an estimated cost of $500 million (approximately Rs 2,400 crore). It calls for reclaiming land, putting up a platform on the reclaimed land and a highway enabling traffic movement.
Work on the project may commence by September 2002 and take three years to complete.
