Commercial Coal Mining

The Union Ministry of Coal has reported a substantial increase in coal production and dispatch from captive and commercial coal blocks for the first quarter of the current financial year, from 01 April 2024, to 30 June 2024, compared to the same period last year.

Coal production saw a 35 percent year-on-year increase, rising from 29.26 million tonnes in Q1/FY2024 to 39.53 million tonnes in Q1/FY2025. Similarly, coal dispatch grew by 34.25 percent year-on-year, from 34.07 million tonnes in Q1/FY2024 to 45.68 million tonnes in Q1/FY2025. The detailed status of coal production and dispatch is as follows:

Production for the power sector experienced significant growth, increasing from 25.02 million tonnes in Q1 last year to 30.16 million tonnes in Q1 this year, a year-on-year growth of 20.5 percent. Production from the non-regulated sector also saw a notable rise, from 1.44 million tonnes in Q1 last year to 2.55 million tonnes in Q1 this year, reflecting a 77 percent year-on-year increase.

Production from coal sales mines showed impressive growth, climbing from 2.80 million tonnes in Q1 last year to 6.81 million tonnes in Q1 this year, marking a 143 percent year-on-year increase.

Dispatch to the power sector rose from 28.90 million tonnes in Q1 last year to 35.65 million tonnes in Q1 this year, achieving a year-on-year growth of 23.3 percent.

Dispatch to the non-regulated sector increased from 1.66 million tonnes in Q1 last year to 2.38 million tonnes in Q1 this year, reflecting a 43.4 percent year-on-year growth.

Dispatch for coal sales rose from 3.51 million tonnes in Q1 last year to 7.64 million tonnes in Q1 this year, an impressive year-on-year growth of 117.67 percent.

The primary objective of the Ministry of Coal is to significantly enhance coal production, ensuring a consistent and reliable supply to meet the nation’s growing energy needs. Through collaborative efforts and targeted support, the Ministry aims to improve efficiency, sustainability, and output across the coal sector.
