Airport Expansion

New Civil Enclave at Bagdogra Airport, West Bengal

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given its approval for the development of a new Civil Enclave at Bagdogra Airport, located in Siliguri, West Bengal. This infrastructure project, to be executed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), is estimated to cost Rs 1,549 crore.

The planned Terminal Building will cover an area of 70,390 square meters and is designed to accommodate up to 3,000 Peak Hour Passengers (PHP). The terminal will have an annual handling capacity of 10 million passengers, addressing the growing demand for air travel in the region. The project will also feature the construction of an Apron with 10 parking bays suitable for A-321 type aircraft, two link taxiways, and Multi-Level Car Parking facilities.

The Terminal Building will be constructed as a Green Building, integrating renewable energy sources and maximizing the use of natural lighting, thus reducing the ecological impact of the airport’s operations.

This project is set to significantly boost the operational efficiency and passenger experience at Bagdogra Airport, enhancing its status as a crucial air travel hub in the eastern part of India.

New Civil Enclave at Bihta, Patna, Bihar

In a parallel move, the CCEA has also approved the development of a New Civil Enclave at Bihta, Patna, Bihar, another major project under the Airports Authority of India. The project is estimated to cost Rs 1,413 crore.

This strategic infrastructure initiative aims to address the anticipated capacity constraints at the existing Patna Airport. Given the limited availability of land at the current site, AAI’s ongoing expansion efforts at Patna Airport have been restricted. The new facility at Bihta is envisioned as a solution to this challenge.

The proposed New Integrated Terminal Building at Bihta Airport will cover an area of 66,000 square meters and is designed to handle 3,000 Peak Hour Passengers (PHP), with an annual capacity to accommodate 5 million passengers. The terminal’s design also allows for future expansion to accommodate up to 10 million passengers annually, ensuring the airport can meet long-term demand.

Key elements of the project include the construction of an Apron with 10 parking bays, capable of supporting aircraft such as A-321, B-737-800, and A-320 types, as well as the development of two link taxiways. This new infrastructure will play a crucial role in alleviating congestion at Patna Airport, providing a much-needed boost to the region’s air travel capacity.

These developments reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing India’s aviation infrastructure, particularly in rapidly growing regions, ensuring that the country’s airports can keep pace with increasing passenger numbers and operational demands.
