The Rs 861-crore Rajahmundry-Godavari bridge project in Andhra Pradesh has attained financial closure. The project developer, Gammon Infrastructure Projects Ltd, announced that a consortium of bankers committed an aggregate amount of Rs 566 crore, leading to financial closure. The project will also receive Rs 118.6 crore as grant from the Centre and another Rs 88.95 crore from the Andhra Pradesh government for the project.
 To be built over the next three years, this new 4.5-km bridge would connect Rajahmundray and Kovvur in Andhra Pradesh. Flying over river Godavari, the bridge will provide connectivity to East Godavari and West Godavari districts of the east coast state. GIPL will design, build, finance and operate the project on BOT basis under a 25-year concession period.
The first road-cum-rail bridge over Godavari was built in 1890s by Sir Arthur Cotton. In the early 1970s, Hindustan Construction Company Ltd built a new road-cum-rail bridge that is considered to be the longest such in Asia.
