Bharat Light & Power, one of India’s largest clean energy generation companies, has fully deployed its state-of-the-art remote monitoring platform, powered by the OSIsoft PI System, with a view to effectively manage and enhance operating productivity across all its existing wind farms in the country with a combined capacity of 200 MW.

According to the company, the platform will support development of new, reliable and clean energy capacity across the country over the next ten years.

OSIsoft and BLP launched a strategic engagement in November last year. BLP’s use of the PI System will be extended to deliver a cloud-based data collection, analysis and management platform for all future wind-energy projects that the company develops within the country.

“We wanted a solution that was best-in-class around the world — no compromises. We evaluated all of the available options and in the end, we selected the OSIsoft PI System,” said Balki Iyer, Director of Development at BLP.

BLP will also leverage the PI System to introduce a new service offering for owners of wind farms around the world. The service, a key growth initiative for BLP, is aimed at improving the performance of wind power projects developed by other companies.

“The PI System is an important tool for companies that want to tie operational performance to key business objectives,” said Brett Higgins, Vice President – Asia Pacific, OSIsoft.

“We’re thrilled to see BLP taking advantage of the robust real-time data capabilities and advanced analysis tools available in the PI System to help meet its environmental and economic performance goals,” he added.

Delivering reliable clean energy is considered a challenge for India. The country is ranked third behind the US and China in greenhouse gas emissions and the energy needs continue to increase with economic growth.

“India has a conundrum — we are one of the top carbon-emitting countries, but there are many people that don’t have basic power,” said BLP’s Iyer.

“That’s a key motivator for us to say, can we scale renewable energy here?”

BLP, founded in 2010 by Tejpreet Singh Chopra, former CEO of GE India, has a robust pipeline of renewable projects in wind, solar and hydro and aims to operate 1 GW of clean, renewable energy projects by 2015. The new service offering will allow the company to extend its expertise in effective renewable energy generation management to projects owned and operated by other companies.

The PI System, the industry standard in enterprise infrastructure for management of real-time data and events, enables users to manage assets, mitigate risks, comply with regulations, improve processes, drive innovation, make business decisions in real time and identify competitive business and market opportunities. OSIsoft has its headquarters in San Leandro, California, USA, with operations worldwide.
