Road-Rail Projects

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated and initiated projects worth Rs 29,400 crore in Mumbai on 13 July 2024.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the Thane Borivali Tunnel Project, valued at Rs 16,600 crore. This Twin Tube Tunnel will run beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, connecting the Western Express Highway in Borivali with Thane Ghodbander Road. Spanning 11.8 km, it is expected to shorten the travel distance between Thane and Borivali by 12 km, saving approximately one hour of travel time.

Additionally, he laid the foundation for the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) Project, valued at over Rs 6,300 crore. The GMLR will link the Western Express Highway at Goregaon with the Eastern Express Highway at Mulund, spanning about 6.65 km. This project will enhance connectivity between Western suburbs, the new airport in Navi Mumbai, and the Pune Mumbai Expressway.

The Prime Minister also initiated the Kalyan Yard Remodelling and the Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal at Turbhe in Navi Mumbai. The Kalyan Yard project aims to segregate long-distance and suburban traffic, increasing the yard’s capacity and improving train operations. The Gati Shakti Terminal, covering over 32,600 sq m, will create local employment opportunities and serve as an additional terminal for handling cement and other commodities.

He also dedicated new platforms at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and extended Platforms No. 10 & 11 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Station. The new platforms at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus are designed for longer trains, increasing passenger capacity. The extension of Platforms No. 10 & 11 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, by 382 meters, includes a cover shed and washable apron, facilitating trains with up to 24 coaches and increasing passenger capacity.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister launched the Mukhyamantri Yuva Karya Prashikshan Yojana, a transformative internship program with an outlay of around Rs 5,600 crore. This initiative aims to tackle youth unemployment by offering skill enhancement and industry exposure to young people aged 18 to 30 years.
