What is Aurangzeb’s contribution to Indian economics (or its downfall)? Poverty? No, it is not poverty but poverty line. Yes, it is Aurangzeb who invented the concept of poverty line in 17th century to identify people who should not be taxed. Our politicians as well as easy chaired economists should be grateful to this Mughal Emperor for inventing a tool which helps them hog the limelight every now and then. It is interesting to see what line of argument Amartya Sen and Jagdish Bhagwati adopt about Aurangzeb.
