New Hospital

On November 13, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the Bhoomi Poojan ceremony for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Darbhanga, Bihar, marking a significant milestone in enhancing India’s healthcare infrastructure under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthaya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). A total of 22 new AIIMS institutions have been approved across various regions in India to bolster access to high-quality medical education and advanced healthcare. Notably, Bihar has received approval for two AIIMS institutions—one already operational in Patna and the new project now underway in Darbhanga.

The AIIMS Darbhanga campus will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1,264 crore on a sprawling 187-acre site located at the Ekmi-Shobhan bypass in Darbhanga. Designed to offer comprehensive healthcare services, the facility will include a 750-bed super-specialty hospital with an AYUSH block, a medical college with 125 seats, and a nursing college accommodating 60 students. In addition, the campus will feature a night shelter to provide accommodations for patients and their attendants, along with residential quarters for doctors, students, and staff members. This initiative aims to provide affordable, world-class tertiary healthcare facilities to the people of Bihar and adjoining areas, covering nearby districts such as Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Saharsa, Purnia, Khagadia, and Katihar. It will also serve residents from neighboring regions of West Bengal and Eastern Uttar Pradesh, making advanced medical services more accessible for a broader population.

The establishment of AIIMS Darbhanga is anticipated to significantly advance the vision of “Swasth Bharat, Samruddh Bharat” (Healthy India, Prosperous India), contributing meaningfully to India’s healthcare mission.

The establishment of these 22 AIIMS institutions is aimed at creating a network of world-class healthcare centres to address regional disparities in healthcare access. These institutes, spread across states such as Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, and Assam, are expected to provide high-standard medical education, research, and tertiary healthcare services. Each AIIMS will be equipped with modern medical facilities, specialized health services, and dedicated departments for medical education and research, fostering a new generation of healthcare professionals and enhancing India’s healthcare capacity.
