In the last week of April 2023, the Gujarat cabinet approved the land allocation policy (draft) for green hydrogen projects proposed in the state. As against the demand of 3.26 lakh hectare, the state has earmarked land parcels of 1.99 lakh hectare for five promoters. The actual allocation of the land is expected to begin soon.

The green hydrogen project promoters, who have been selected for land allocation are Reliance New Energy (74,750 ha), AdaniNew Industries (84,486 ha), Torrent Power (18,000 ha), ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (14,393 ha) and the Welspun Group (8,000 ha). The identified land parcels are in Kutchh and Banaskantha districts of the state.

Reliance Industries (RIL) is developing the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex. The project’s objective is to build four Giga Factories that will manufacture and fully integrate all the critical components of the New Energy ecosystem. These factories include the Integrated Solar Photovoltaic Module Factory for producing solar cells, the Advanced Energy Storage Battery Factory for storing intermittent energy, the Electrolyser Factory for creating green hydrogen, and the Fuel Cell Factory for converting hydrogen into motive and stationary power. The project is currently under execution and is expected to cost 60,000.00 Crore.

Ocior Energy India is planning to establish a Green Hydrogen & Green Ammonia plant in the Kachchh district of Gujarat. The proposed project will have a capacity of 1 million tpa and will be implemented in two phases. The project is expected to generate 10,400 direct and indirect employment opportunities and will cost Rs 40,000 crore.

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India is also planning to set up a Green Steel Plant with a Captive Port in Suvali, located in the Surat district of Gujarat. This green steel project is estimated to cost Rs 30,000 crore.
