roopwayHimachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has sought exemption from forest and environment clearances from the Union Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) for the 31 km electric ropeway smart urban transport project.

Webcos, consultant of the Central government, had carried out a pre-feasibility survey and found the project as the only solution to decongest Shimla city for the next 50 years. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 1,120 crore.

The Phase-I of the project has received Central government nod. As per the proposal, the project will have 32 stations with smart parking lots. The ropeway will carry 10,000 passengers both ways at a time. Each station will be linked in a five-minute aerial journey in contrast with an hour or half an hour it takes at present to reach Sanjauli from the ISBT during peak hours.
