IIT Madras has entered into an agreement with Indian Railways to establish a Centre for Railway Research as part of a long-term collaboration for research and development. The Centre for Railway Research (CRR) at IIT-M will offer degree and post-graduate courses and PhD programme in research areas related to Railways and will also involve students in research projects and offer course electives related to railway technology.

Through this MoU, the centre plans to carry out research related to structural health monitoring of railway infrastructure (rails, bridges, engines, wagons/ coaches, electrical and stations) by embedded intelligence, intelligent transportation, computer vision and imaging technologies, advanced techniques for trains control and communication). It will also work on decision sciences, alternate engine propulsion technologies, reliability engineering, energy management, advanced materials technologies, advanced joining technologies and non-destructing testing & evaluation.
