The cost of Muzzafarpur thermal power project stage II has been increased from Rs. 3,344.67 crore to Rs. 3930 crore due to slight change in scope of work of preliminary and civil works, mechanical & electrical works, coal transportation system and physical contingency. Further, the date for commercial operation for the project has been pushed to November 1, 2014 for Unit-3 and February 1, 2015 for Unit-4 as against the earlier proposed commercial operation date of October 2012 and January 2013 for the third and fourth unit respectively.
Delay in completion of the project too has added to the project cost. According to Kanti Bijlee Utpadan Nigam, the project promoter, delay in completion of the project is mainly due to the sloppy pace of works of the contractors, namely, Techpro, GET Power and Unitech.
