NHPC will hold meeting with experts of I IT Guwahati and CWC next week over various technical issues concerning Subansiri Lower hydro power project. It may be remembered here that a meeting was held on December 23, 2013 between the Expert Group formed at the request of All Assam Students Union and Experts of Government of India & NHPC. In this meeting a detailed deliberation on seismicity, flood mitigation and foundation competency of the dam was held. Next week’s scheduled meeting will further deliberate upon these issues.

NHPC’s Subansiri Lower hydro electric power project constitutes Phase I of the overall Subansiri Project. The project involves setting up of 8X250 MW hydro power generation capacity in the lower reaches of River Subansiri, Hapoli (Ziro) in Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh. However, the project has been stalled since December 2011 due to local agitations against the project. The project was estimated to cost Rs. 7,452 crore. However, this cost is likely to go up substantially as no project work has taken place during last two years. NHPC has already spent Rs. 6,000 crore on the project and is spending around Rs. 600 crore every year on the project which is considered to be unproductive. As per the original schedule the project should have been completed by September 2010.
