Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav performed the Bhoomi Pujan for the T-Series Tanks Overhaul Project at Vehicle Factory, Jabalpur, on August 27, 2026.
The project, being developed by Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), involves setting up overhaul facilities for T-72 and T-90 tanks at an estimated investment of Rs 472 crore. The facility is planned to have an annual overhaul capacity of 80 tanks, supporting the Indian Army’s requirement of 230 tanks per year. The Heavy Vehicles Factory, Avadi, currently has capacity to overhaul 150 tanks annually.
The project is expected to strengthen Jabalpur’s position as a defence manufacturing, maintenance and modernisation hub. It will also create opportunities for MSMEs through demand for mechanical, electrical, electronic and hydraulic components, assemblies and ancillary services.
Rajnath Singh said the facility would support India’s efforts towards self-reliance in defence production by enabling domestic repair, maintenance and modernisation of critical military platforms.
The project is also expected to generate employment and encourage local industrial participation in Jabalpur and surrounding areas.
The initiative forms part of Madhya Pradesh’s broader push to develop a defence and aerospace manufacturing ecosystem, with proposed investments exceeding Rs 16,960 crore in the Gwalior-Chambal region.
