The Government of India is planning to build a tunnel connecting two rivers. The tunnel will span 8.7 kilometers, with an estimated construction cost of Rs 2,300 crore. The project is also designed to facilitate electricity generation. However, this development is a matter of concern for neighboring Pakistan. The government plans to commence construction on August 1. There are also various other specialized tunnels being planned to meet specific needs.
The project is scheduled for completion by approximately July 31, 2029. The objective is to divert surplus water from the Chenab River through the tunnel to the Beas River basin. NHPC will execute the project. It will be located on the Chenab River in the Lahaul Valley of Himachal Pradesh. Subsequently, the diverted water will also be used to generate electricity.
The project will be implemented in high-altitude mountainous terrain, with elevations ranging from 3,095 meters to 6,517 meters. The project will generate electricity in India, thereby benefiting a large number of people.
