S. L. Dhingra_Transportation Systems Engineering_ProjectsMonitorBorn on October 11, 1942, Sundar Lall Dhingra achieved his doctorate in Transportation Systems Engineering from IIT Kanpur, in 1981. Joined as a lecturer in Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, in 1967, Prof. Dhingra is now Institute Chair Professor and Emeritus Fellow in Transportation Systems Engineering, at IIT Bombay.

His major fields of interest are Modelling, Economic/Financial, EIA and Evaluation & Analysis of MRTS projects, Simulation of Route Rationalisation and Scheduling of Coordinated Urban Mass Transit System, Land-use Transport Modelling, and Travel Demand Forecasting using advanced techniques – GIS/Expert system /DSS, Micro-simulation, Fuzzy-Set, GA & CA in Transportation Modelling.

Prof. Dhingra has been instrumental in starting a very successful PG programme in Transportation Systems Engineering in 1987. He also established Transportation Engineering Laboratory at MNIT Jaipur and Transportation Systems Engineering Labs at IIT Bombay. He completed several mega projects as PI, Advisory, Consultancy and R&D. During his service he wrote nearly 190 technical papers on transportation infrastructure. He was nominated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Risk Management for Roads of PIARC for 2004-07, member of the advisor committees by Maharashtra Airport Development Company Ltd for the development of multimodal international airport hub airport at Nagpur, and one-man committee for socio-environmental investigation of 3.2-km Haji Ali-Wilson College urban viaduct. He was also in the technical advisory committee of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd for many landmark mega projects like Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

Prof. Dhingra’s computer-based highway economic investment and analysis model has been developed and successfully used for certain highway projects of then Ministry of Shipping and Transport ensuring MoST a World Bank Loan of about Rs.400 crore. His depot augmentation software programme has been developed for DTC network.

Besides, he has investigated many road projects under PMGSY, development of GIS database for regional road network in Mumbai Metropolitan Region, and EIA of transportation improvement projects in MMR under MUTP-II. Prof. Dhingra has did the master planning for Mumbai Metro Project. His current projects are MTHL, BRTS and EIA of Navi Mumbai International Airport, and elevated/underground metro.

Prof. Dhingra has been conferred with several awards including Vishveshvaraiya Construction Excellency Award in 2006 and International Engineer of the Year 2010 & 2012, to name a few.
