Mitsubishi Corporation has won its first turnkey steel plant project in India, though the Japan-based company has built several such plants in other parts of Asian and in Latin America. Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) along with Larsen & Toubro recently signed a contract with Central steel PSU Steel Authority of India Ltd for the construction of a hot strip mill with production capacity of 3 million tpa to be constructed at SAIL’s Rourkela plant in Odisha. The mill will roll steel slabs into hot rolled coils. The plant is scheduled to start operations from the beginning of 2018, a release by Mitsubishi said.

The consortium of MC and L&T will serve as contractor of the project, with MC undertaking project management, while L&T will undertake civil construction, erection, and local supply. Primetals Technologies Ltd will provide design, engineering and supply of critical mechanical equipment, while Hitachi, Ltd will provide design, engineering and supply of electrical and automation systems. Overall project execution will be supported by Mitsubishi Corporation Machinery, Inc. a subsidiary of MC.

SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant currently has a hot metal capacity of 2 million tpa that is being substantially expanded to 4.5 million tpa. Meanwhile, India achieved crude steel production of 90 million tonnes in 2014 and the steel ministry plans to take this to 300 million tonnes by 2025.
