On 23 September 2023, the Assam government approved a Rs 5,196.91 crore project to modernize the power distribution infrastructure across the state. The detailed project report for the implementation of the distribution infrastructure work in the power sector received cabinet approval during the day in its meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The project for modernizing the power distribution system in Assam will be implemented under the Union government’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme.

The state government is confident that the project will be completed by 31 March 2026, and will benefit around 67 lakh electrical consumers in Assam. The council of ministers also decided to execute a power purchase agreement (PPA) for 100 MW at rates offered by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), enabling Assam to procure green power from renewable sources.

As of 25 September 2023, according to Projects Today, there were 186 electricity generation and distribution projects worth Rs 59,920 crore in Assam. Of the total projects, 143 were power distribution projects, and 43 were power generation projects. Furthermore, of the 43 projects, 25 projects worth Rs 14,867 crore were renewable energy projects.
