The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has sanctioned an investment of Rs 1,750 crore for the development of the Tato-I Hydro Electric Project (HEP) in Shi Yomi District, Arunachal Pradesh. The project is expected to be completed within 50 months. With an installed capacity of 186 MW (3 units of 62 MW each), the project will generate 802 million units (MU) of electricity. This power will help enhance the energy supply in Arunachal Pradesh and contribute to stabilizing the national grid.
The project will be executed through a joint venture between North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the Arunachal Pradesh government. The central government will provide Rs 77.37 crore for the construction of necessary infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and transmission lines, as well as Rs 120.43 crore in central financial assistance to support the state’s equity share.
Arunachal Pradesh will also benefit from 12 percent free power and an additional 1% allocated to the Local Area Development Fund (LADF), as well as major infrastructure upgrades and socio-economic development. The project will include the construction of around 10 km of roads and bridges, primarily for local use, alongside the development of critical facilities such as hospitals, schools, vocational institutes, markets, and playgrounds, funded by a dedicated Rs 15 crore for community development.
Similarly, the Cabinet has approved an investment of Rs 1,939 crore for the Heo Hydro Electric Project (HEP) in Shi Yomi District, also with a 50-month completion timeline. With a capacity of 240 MW (3 units of 80 MW), this project is expected to generate 1,000 MU of energy. Like Tato-I, it will aid in improving the state’s power supply and contribute to the national grid.
The Heo HEP will also be developed through a joint venture between NEEPCO and the state government, with the central government offering Rs 127.28 crore for enabling infrastructure and Rs 130.43 crore in central financial support for the state’s equity share. The state will again benefit from 12 percent free power, 1 percent for the LADF, and significant improvements in local infrastructure and socio-economic conditions.
During its construction, the Heo project will employ around 200 personnel from NEEPCO and 400 workers from the contractors. Additionally, it will generate indirect employment for the local community through small contracts and services.
