Chennai Metro Rail resumes work on Phase-I extension projectChennai Metro Rail (CMRL) has resumed preparatory work at Chennai Central and Wimco Nagar in North Chennai for Phase-I extension project, after a gap of around 1.5 month due to COVID-19 lockdown.

The basic cleaning and other preparatory work began on 4 May 2020 in the Central Square and the Wimco Nagar depot.

The actual construction work has commenced from 6 May 2020. The authorities gradually expand the work to other sites in Phase-I extension project such as building of stations and other related work.

CMRL will have only around 25-30 percent of workforce on the construction site now, till the situation improves.

There will be a special safety team that will monitor the movement of workers inside the site to ensure that they continue to wear masks throughout the day and maintain social distancing.

It also plans to have mobile hand-washing facilities at various points on the sites. The workers will be permitted into the sites only after temperature checks.

Chennai Metro Rail had planned to start train services in Phase-I extension project that covers nine km of north Chennai in June 2020.However, it will now be delayed
