The Coimbatore Corporation has unveiled an ambitious plan for an underground sewerage project, with an estimated budget of Rs 824 crore. This initiative aims to enhance sanitation infrastructure in the regions of Kalapatti, parts of Vilankurichi, and Saravanampatti, encompassing a total of nine wards. The project is designed to establish a comprehensive sewer network spanning 411 kilometers, which is expected to serve approximately 33,637 households.
According to Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been meticulously prepared and submitted to the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA). He emphasized the ongoing efforts to secure funding through the Special Infrastructure Component of the Central Finance Commission. “We are working on tying up funds for the project under the Special Infrastructure Component of the Central Finance Commission,” he stated.
The sewerage system’s design takes into account the area’s topography and anticipated population growth. Projections indicate that the population in these wards will reach approximately 130,264 by 2030, with further estimates extending to 2045 and 2060. Based on these figures, sewage generation is projected to be 13.37 million liters per day (MLD) during the initial phase, increasing to 17.66 MLD in the intermediate phase, and ultimately reaching 23.09 MLD.
The proposed sewer network will include 15,777 manholes, along with ten sewage pumping stations and five sewage lifting stations to efficiently collect and transport sewage. The collected waste will be directed to a new sewage treatment plant located in Ondipudur, which is designed to handle a capacity of 17.66 MLD. The treated effluent is intended to be discharged into the Noyyal River, contributing to improved environmental conditions.
Currently, underground sewerage works are progressing in four different packages across the city. Completed projects include those in Kurichi and Kuniyamuthur, while the Chinnavedampatti–Saravanampatti package is 44% complete. The Ondipudur package is nearing completion at 70%, and works in Vadavalli, Veerakeralam, Thudiyalur, and Kavundampalayam have reached 42% completion. Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja expressed optimism about the project, stating, “Once this project is taken up and completed, the entire city will be connected to the underground sewerage system. This will help prevent sewage from entering waterbodies.”
