Chennai is on the brink of a transformative public transport initiative that could revolutionize daily commutes. The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is exploring the feasibility of a 70-kilometer water metro system that would connect Ennore to Mahabalipuram via the Buckingham Canal. This ambitious project aims to alleviate the stress of congested roadways and crowded buses by offering a modern, air-conditioned boat service.
Currently, CMRL is in the process of conducting a detailed feasibility study, which includes assessing potential connections with existing metro rail services, the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), and suburban trains. A tender has been issued for the preparation of a comprehensive project report, which, if deemed viable, could establish a significant north-south transport corridor. This would mark the second water metro network in India, following the successful implementation in Kochi.
Connecting Key Areas
The proposed water metro corridor is set to link at least 18 vital locations, including Tondiarpet, Basin Bridge, Chepauk, and Thiruvanmiyur, among others. According to a CMRL official, the system will feature amenities akin to those found in the city’s metro network, such as air-conditioned boats, waiting areas, automated fare collection gates, and enhanced security measures. “We anticipate completing the feasibility report and detailed project report within eight months, ensuring that commuters enjoy a seamless experience similar to that of the metro,” the official stated.
Integration with existing transport systems is a priority, with plans to connect the water metro to Phase I and Phase II metro corridors and MRTS at strategic points, including Thiruvanmiyur and Kotturpuram, complete with dedicated walkways for pedestrians.
Challenges and Considerations
The feasibility study will evaluate various factors, including traffic demand, potential ridership, flood risks, navigation issues, and the necessary infrastructure for passenger terminals. The subsequent detailed project report will delve into engineering designs, geotechnical assessments, cost estimates, and the number and placement of stations. A significant aspect of the project will involve the restoration of the Buckingham Canal, which spans 448 kilometers from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh to Marakkanam, with a portion running through Chennai.
Urban planner K P Subramanian emphasized the importance of ensuring that the water metro complements existing public transport systems rather than replacing them. He noted that while water transport is a sustainable and cost-effective option, significant challenges remain, including the need for canal cleaning, sewage management, and infrastructure improvements. Without addressing these issues, the potential of the water metro may not be fully realized.
