Maharashtra is planning to establish a Film City across 125 acres in Guhagar taluka of Ratnagiri district, in the Konkan region, to strengthen film production infrastructure along the state’s coastline and create local employment opportunities.
The proposed project is being spearheaded by Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, with the state’s tourism and cultural affairs departments preparing a detailed project report (DPR). The facility is likely to be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with participation from private players in the entertainment industry.
The government is considering an initial investment of around Rs 100 crore for the project. The proposed Film City is expected to feature two or three studios, accommodation facilities for film crews and suitable locations for shooting films and television serials.
The project will cover land in Palshet, Velneshwar and Tavsal villages, currently under the control of the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC). The development aims to address infrastructure and logistical challenges faced by production teams shooting along the Konkan coast.
According to the report, the Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation Limited has identified Dapoli and Guhagar as popular destinations for film and television shoots because of their scenic landscapes and coastal stretches. However, the absence of adequate studios and supporting facilities has made production arrangements difficult for visiting crews.
The proposed facility is expected to provide production infrastructure closer to these coastal locations, reducing logistical requirements for filmmakers who otherwise depend on facilities in Mumbai and Karjat.
Maharashtra already has an established Film City in Goregaon, Mumbai, while other Film City proposals have been discussed for locations including Nashik, Nagpur and Malad. The proposed Konkan project is intended to expand the state’s film-production infrastructure beyond its existing centres.
Once developed, the facility could support film, television and other audiovisual productions while creating opportunities for local businesses and workers in hospitality, transport, equipment rentals and production services. The project remains at the planning and DPR-preparation stage, with its final configuration and implementation arrangements yet to be confirmed.
