The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts with Economic Explosive Limited (EEL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL) for the procurement of Area Denial Munition (ADM) Type-1 (DPICM) and High Explosive Pre-Fragmented (HEPF) Mk-1 (Enhanced) rockets for the PINAKA Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). The total contract value stands at ₹10,147 crore. Additionally, a contract has been inked with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for upgrades to the SHAKTI Software. The agreements were formalized in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi on February 6, 2025.
The ADM Type-1 variant of the PINAKA MLRS is designed to deploy a cluster of sub-munitions across a wide area, effectively neutralizing mechanized enemy formations, vehicles, and personnel, thereby restricting their movement. Meanwhile, the HEPF Mk-1 (E) rockets are an advanced version of the currently deployed HEPF rockets, featuring an extended range and enhanced precision to strike deep within enemy territory with greater lethality.
The procurement of ADM Type-1 (DPICM) and HEPF Mk-1 (E) rockets marks a crucial milestone in the modernization of India’s Artillery Rocket Regiments. These state-of-the-art munitions will significantly enhance the Indian Army’s firepower, enabling long-range, high-precision strikes that reinforce national security.
Beyond strengthening India’s Defence capabilities, these projects will contribute to employment generation by fostering growth within the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector, particularly in the manufacturing of critical components. The initiative underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in Defence production, aligning with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision of the Government.
